Wayne County Home Schoolers (WCHS) is a group specifically for families who school in non-traditional ways in the Wayne County, NC area. This includes families that use traditional homeschooling methods, unschooling, virtual private schools, and virtual public schools.
We are an INCLUSIVE group that embraces diversity to include all ethnicities, religions, genders, ages, and orientations. It is our desire that you will find new friends and opportunities through our group that will support you during your home schooling journey.
This is an active group, and we expect all our members to be active in our homeschool community at least once per school year. Those who are not active at least once per school year may be removed from the group.
All members of Wayne County Home Schoolers must agree to the WCHS Mission Statement, located on our online application, and treat everyone in the group with dignity and respect. Anyone who acts in a way that does not support this statement can be removed from the group. This is not to say there won't be any conflict. Conflict will happen, but it is how we handle the conflict that matters!
WCHS offers a variety of homeschool support activities. All of our co-op class offerings, clubs, field trips, and programs are parent-powered and depend on the leadership, skill, and collaboration of all WCHS LEADers. Facilitating these programs for our group is a great undertaking. If you want to coordinate a WCHS program or teach a co-op class, contact Ash M.
WCHS Program Participation Policy: The following rules shall be observed at all WCHS events and activities by all members:
- Be courteous, considerate, and respectful.
- Behave and dress appropriately.
- No profanity
- No smoking, illegal drugs, or alcohol
- No slander or hurtful language
- No derogatory gestures
- When attending activities as a group, our behavior reflects not only on individual families, but on WCHS as a whole. Please shine a positive light on WCHS! We always want to be “remembered fondly” and “asked back” if we’ve attended an event as a group.
- Alert the Activity Coordinator if you can’t make it to an event. Parents are responsible for their own child(ren) during any WCHS-sponsored activity. If you are unable to accompany your child, you must make specific arrangement with another WCHS Member to be responsible for your child.
Photography Release: By participating in any WCHS activity, you acknowledge that your name and email address may be viewable by other members. WCHS may take photographs / videos / interviews of students and families at organizational functions for use in yearbooks, newsletters, websites, social media, etc. Contact and other relevant information may be shared with instructors or coordinators for the activities in which you participate, and photographs may be included in group emails / publications / social media, etc. Names will only be used if a group has an in-group publication, such as a yearbook or newsletter.
Sickness Policy: Do NOT attend any WCHS activity or program if you or anyone in your household has any of the following:
- Fever of 100 or above within the past 24 hours
- Uncontrolled coughing or wheezing
- Lethargy
- Vomiting within the past 48 hours
- Any rash
- Pinkeye
- Scabies
- Head lice
- Impetigo
- Strep
- Whooping cough
- Measles
- Mumps
- Chickenpox
- Flu
- Covid-19
Use common sense. Please be on the alert for any symptoms of communicable diseases. If you or any other member of your household is feeling unwell, please stay home. Conversely, if a family member has a clear runny nose that is strictly due to allergies, then please feel free to bring your family.
Hybrid and Virtual Academy Classes: All WCHS Hybrid and Virtual Academy classes use Google Classroom and/or Zoom. Internet is required for all hybrid and VA classes. If your child is taking a class with Google Classroom, your student will need a Gmail account in order to participate successfully. By registering for a hybrid or VA Class, you acknowledge this requirement. A hybrid class will have work outside of the normal co-op class time.
Cooperative (Co-Op) Enrollment Fee: There is a $20.00 Co-Op enrollment fee per semester per family. Each family will be required to pay the fee in order to sign up for any WCHS Co-Op class. This is per family and NOT per student. The Co-Op enrollment fee is due at the time of class registration. If you do not submit the Co-Op enrollment fee, you DO NOT have a spot in Co-Op.
Volunteer Policy: This policy extends to all cooperative (Co-op) classes.
- I understand that all parents or educating household guardians are required to volunteer the entire time their child(ren) is participating in cooperative or Co-op class(es).
- I understand that parents or educating household guardians must remain on site while their children participate in Co-op classes.
- Co-op Directors will assign parents to volunteer positions. Volunteer positions include teacher assistant, hall monitor, clean-up crew, substitute teacher, nursery, etc.
- Our WCHS Co-op teachers, who make all of our wonderful classes come to fruition, always receive first chance to enroll in Co-op classes.
Cooperative (Co-Op) Classes Parental Agreement:
- I understand and agree to adhere to the Program Participation, Volunteer, and Sickness Policies as listed above.
- I understand that I must remain at Co-op the entire time my child is participating at Co-op and must remain at my assigned location during Co-op.
- I understand that WCHS is not an accredited institution, and WCHS does not give "high school credits" or keep academic records. Some parents may choose to use class time towards fulfilling high school requirements, but it is at their discretion.
- I understand that WCHS Co-op is not a brick and mortar school nor a hybrid school. WCHS Co-op provides enrichment activities that are parent driven and can be used as a supplement to each family's homeschool, not a replacement.
- I understand that I MUST PAY for my child's Co-op classes when I enroll my child. If I do not pay at the time of enrollment, then my child does NOT have a spot in the class.
